Fedora 10 Review

Over the holidays I decided that this would be the perfect time to upgrade my primary computer to the latest release of my preferred Linux distribution.

After the last upgrade to fedora 9 I was reluctant to try out release 10 "Cambridge". I gave up on 9 and went back to 8.

I'm very pleased with the latest and greatest fedora. The installation went off with no troubles at all. There was very little wrong and most of my system's primary hardware worked with no hassles.

Except for the wireless card which was very sluggish and had problems with name resolution. I tried everything possible with little success until finally $yum install madwifi fixed it up fine. It was like rebuilding a carburetor when all that was wrong was the filter was plugged.

Try the obvious first!

The fedora team has out done themselves and are truly nearing the point where they will have a system suitable for the standard consumer.

Even though trouble shooting problems, searching the forums for info and getting something to work can be enjoyable for me. It shouldn't take up much time. I have other interests and my os should not be a drain on my time.

In the short time since my switch to open source the madwifi team was formed and in a matter of a few of years they developed drivers for the atheros wireless cards. At first you needed to download and install their drivers if you wanted wireless, My computer needed a patched driver which complicated things somewhat. But now the standard kernel is supporting most atheros cards and the unpatched madwifi driver is supporting the others.

More items are covered in the graphical interface then ever before. Which for users like me gives a better feeling of being in control of my computer rather than with windows where it always seemed that the computer constantly did things that I did not want it to do.

Windows computers are condescending.
